Understanding HEIC Metadata & EXIF Data
Every photo taken with a modern smartphone or digital camera contains hidden information known as Metadata. For HEIC files, this data is stored using the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) structure, which is much more capable than the legacy JPEG container.
📍 GPS Coordinates
Includes exact Latitude, Longitude, and Altitude. Essential for travel tracking but a major privacy risk if shared publicly.
⚙️ Camera Settings
View the ISO, Aperture (f-stop), Shutter Speed, and Focal Length used to capture the image.
📱 Device Info
Identify the hardware, such as "iPhone 15 Pro Max" or "Sony A7R V," and the software version used.
The Technical Side: EXIF vs XMP
HEIC files primarily use EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) to store technical capture data. However, they can also contain XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) data, which is used by professional editing tools like Adobe Lightroom to store non-destructive edits and copyright information.
Privacy and Metadata Security
When you share a photo on social media or via email, you are often unknowingly sharing your precise location. Using the HEIC Metadata Viewer at HEIC.dev allows you to audit your photos locally before sharing. Because our tool runs in your browser via WebAssembly, your sensitive location data is never transmitted to our servers.
