Understanding HEIC Metadata & EXIF Data

Every photo taken with a modern smartphone or digital camera contains hidden information known as Metadata. For HEIC files, this data is stored using the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) structure, which is much more capable than the legacy JPEG container.

📍 GPS Coordinates

Includes exact Latitude, Longitude, and Altitude. Essential for travel tracking but a major privacy risk if shared publicly.

⚙️ Camera Settings

View the ISO, Aperture (f-stop), Shutter Speed, and Focal Length used to capture the image.

📱 Device Info

Identify the hardware, such as "iPhone 15 Pro Max" or "Sony A7R V," and the software version used.

The Technical Side: EXIF vs XMP

HEIC files primarily use EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) to store technical capture data. However, they can also contain XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) data, which is used by professional editing tools like Adobe Lightroom to store non-destructive edits and copyright information.

Privacy and Metadata Security

When you share a photo on social media or via email, you are often unknowingly sharing your precise location. Using the HEIC Metadata Viewer at HEIC.dev allows you to audit your photos locally before sharing. Because our tool runs in your browser via WebAssembly, your sensitive location data is never transmitted to our servers.

Metadata Viewer Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to view my GPS location in an online viewer?
Yes, because HEIC.dev uses "No-Server" technology. The EXIF extraction happens entirely inside your browser tab. Your GPS coordinates and private image data are never sent to any server.
Can I remove metadata using this tool?
This specific tool is for viewing. To remove metadata, use our HEIC to JPG converter and ensure "Preserve Metadata" is unchecked in the Advanced Settings before converting.
What kind of data can I see in a HEIC file?
You can see the camera model, lens used, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, date taken, and often the precise GPS location where the photo was shot.
Why does my HEIC file not show any GPS data?
If you disabled "Location Services" for your camera on your iPhone, or if the photo was shared via certain apps that strip metadata (like WhatsApp), the GPS info will not be present.
Does this work with HEIF files from other cameras?
Yes! While designed for iPhone HEIC, it works with HEIF/HEIC files from Samsung, Sony, Canon, and any other device that follows the standard.
Can I export the metadata to a text file?
Yes, our viewer allows you to copy all the metadata fields to your clipboard or download them as a JSON/TXT file for further analysis.
Does viewing metadata change the file?
No, our tool is read-only. Your original HEIC file remains untouched on your device.
Is there a limit to how many files I can inspect?
No, you can inspect as many files as you like. There are no daily limits or quotas.
Can I see XMP and IPTC data as well?
Yes, our advanced inspector reads EXIF, XMP, and IPTC metadata blocks if they are present in the HEIF container.
Is this tool free for digital forensic use?
Yes, many professionals use our tool for quick metadata verification because it is fast, private, and requires no installation.
